Is a Micro Market a Good Fit for Your Break Room?

Do you need a new way to provide snacks and drinks for your employees during breaktime? If so, a micro market might be the perfect solution. Micro markets are self-service kiosks that offer a larger and healthier variety of foods and drinks than your average vending machine, and they are becoming an increasingly popular choice for all kinds of businesses. However, they’re certainly not for everyone.

If you want to determine whether a micro market is a good fit for your breakroom, you’ve come to the right place. We’re going to discuss the different factors you should consider before investing in a micro market to make sure it’s the best use of your company’s time and money. Let’s get started!

Space

Perhaps the most important factor is the size of your breakroom. While you can technically customize a micro market to fit just about any space, you do need room for some essential equipment. For example,  you’ll need room for food and drink coolers and/or racks, as well as a self-checkout kiosk. If your break room is on the smaller side, you might not have enough room to accommodate all of this equipment.

In addition, you’ll need to consider the traffic flow in your breakroom. If it’s already cramped and busy, adding a micro market might just make things worse. Employees could have difficulty getting around the kiosk or coolers, and this could lead to frustration and even accidents.

However, if your break room is on the larger side or has some extra space that’s not in use, a micro market may be a great addition. Just be sure to leave enough room for employees to move around comfortably and avoid any potential hazards.

Use

Do you think your employees would actually use a micro market? Some people enjoy getting out of the office for their breaks, as it can be a good opportunity to recharge and get a change of scenery. If this sounds like your staff, then a micro market might not be the best investment.

On the other hand, if most of your employees prefer to stay in the office during breaktime or there’s a lack of accessible food options nearby, a micro market could be just what they need. It would provide them with a convenient way to get snacks and drinks without having to leave the office, and they would probably appreciate not having to wait in line at a busy cafeteria or coffee shop.

Also, if your employees work odd hours or are often stuck in the office late, a micro market may be a lifesaver. They would have 24/7 access to snacks and drinks, which would help them get through those long nights.

Cost

While some providers do install, deliver, restock, and do repairs for micro markets free of charge, there are other costs that can make them a bit expensive. For example, you’ll need to factor in the cost of the equipment, which can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand depending on the size and complexity of the market. You’ll also need to pay for the food and drinks that will be stocked in the market, which can add up quickly.

Of course, you could offset some of these costs by charging employees for the items they purchase from the micro market. However, you’ll need to decide whether this is something your employees would be willing to pay for out of pocket.
